Owen's Two part 1

My little boy turned 2 on Wednesday! It's hard to believe he's two already. I feel like if I blink, he'll be married and have his own kids. So I'm trying to appreciate everyday with him. Even when he's on the floor throwing a fit.

I realized that I've never written about his birth story. So here it is.

This is me 24 hours before he was born.

Owen's due date was on January 24 but that day came and went without any excitement. The next day was a Monday so Cody headed off to work. I planned to stay home with Lily all day. So we watched some movies and then I made lunch. Around 12:10 I felt my first contraction. It felt so different that I knew something was happening. I waited two hours and I was still getting contractions but nothing too bad. But I figured I should call Cody and let him know what was up.

He picked up the phone and was like, do I need to come home? I laughed at him (and so did his office mate) and told him not yet but he might want to be ready soon. I wanted to labor at home more this time around, so I tried to push my pain tolerance. I noticed that when I would sit down the contractions would slow down so I started to walk around the house as much as I could. About an hour later I was in serious pain and the contractions were getting closer together, so I called Cody and told him he needed to get his "butt" home now.

30 minutes later he came home and we packed Lily's stuff so she could go over to Cody's parents' house. We got to the hospital around 5:30 and I wanted to die from the pain. I kept telling Cody this was our last kid, I'm not doing it ever again, and people who have natural births are crazy (no offense but I was in alot of pain and don't see how you girls do it, but more props to you). We went up to triage and checked in. The midwife checked me out and was so happy that someone showed up qho was actually in labor that she kissed me on the forehead. I was dilated about 4-5 cm so she gave us a room and 30 minutes later I got one of God's most precious gifts to women (at least in my opion): an epidural.

I LOVED my epidural. This one didn't work as good as the one I had with Lily (I didn't feel a darn thing with that one) as I could still feel a little pain on one side but it was totally manageable. For me personally, I didn't want to be screaming when my child came into this world, I wanted a nice relaxed and calm birth. My midwife had asked me what my birth plan was and the only two things on it was an epidural as fast as humanly possible and a safe delivery for Owen. Everything besides those two things, I just didn't care. A little funny story on a side note was after the epidural I called Joanna (my cousin) and she's like, did you have the baby already, because I was nice and calm. I was like, nope I had an epidural, and she laughed at me.

So nine o'clock rolled around and I started to feel some pressure, so we got a nurse and she checked me and I was 10 cm and ready to go. My midwife came in (who by the way is one of the nicest ladies ever) and I pushed for about 5 minutes and Owen came out at 9:28 pm. He was so not happy about coming out. He cried and cried and cried. But eventually he calmed down and ate and then was quite content. And that is Owen's birth story. So nothing (Thank you God) too exciting happened; it was a nice and calm birth.

Graduation

I'm soooo behind on blogging. But that's nothing new.

So here are some pics from Cody's graduation. He got his MBA with a 4.0. He did this while having a pregnant wife, young daughter, newborn, being married, being a father, and having a full time job which meant after the kids were asleep (and usually his wife asleep on the couch) he would do his work. I'm so proud of him.

So while we are very Thankful that Cody could go to State pretty much for free, we couldn't help but throw the Lobo sign around a little. Once a Lobo, Always a Lobo (even when you have to go to the rival school).

Here is Cody with State's mascot Pistol Pete. What Pete didn't realize was Cody giving the Lobo sign :) I'm still trying to find that pic. By the way, State's lovely fight song includes the lines "And when we win this game,We’ll buy a keg of booze,And we’ll drink it to the Aggies‘till we wobble in our shoes!" Nice :)

10 Years part 2

I really did mean to update sooner, it's just that there's so much stuff going on right now. We're so busy with summer act ivies. But that's another post.

I find it very hard to express in words the depth of my love for Cody. He's everything to me. He's my friend, my soul's mate, the only person I ever want to wake up to, the father of my children, my hope, my joy, the one person I like to argue with (in a good way, and he thinks he's always right), the person I love to play pranks on the most, and so many, many more things. I just love him.

I also love him because he works so hard that I can stay home with the kids. I know I don't tell him this enough but Thank you. Thank you for working so hard, for going to school so we can have a better life, for just being there, and for being my friend. I love you and look forward to the next 10 years.

This time (8:15 pm) last week everything was still "normal". Then one single phone call changed everything. It changed Cody from having a brother, it changed his parents from having a son, it changed Lily and Owen from having an awesome uncle.

I hate when the phone rings after 9'o clock. I just hate it. My mind just jumps to all the bad things that could happen. But 99% of the time it's not bad. But last week it was. And deep down in my heart it just felt different when the phone rang. Then 15 minutes later I got another phone call from Cody telling me that our world was about to be changed forever.

This past week has been one of the longest weeks of my life. It was full of what-if's and should've-dones. It was full of seeing family that you love to see but wish it was for a completely different reason. It was full of tears and heartbreak. I've cried so much this week I don't think I have anything left in me. And it was full of I-wish-I-can-change-it's. But I can't change anything. What was supposed to happen, happened.

Now it's trying to heal, find a new "normal" and trusting. Trying to heal the broken hearts, trying to tell Lily why she won't see her uncle anymore, and - the most important one - trusting God. All of these are so hard to do right now.

One last thought for now: I hated his politics, but I still loved him and will miss him greatly.

Here are some pictures from our Christmas.

I really wanted to decorate the outside of the house so I got Lily's sidewalk chalk and used them to draw some things on our garage door. Lily helped a little and then some of the neighbor kids came and also decided they wanted to help. They drew some really random things on the door but it rained the next day, so I got to draw this.

These are from Christmas Eve. Our tradition is to go to church, go look at some lights, and then come home and open stockings. Owen is very excited about my candy.

So the day before I wrapped Cody's presents and had Lily help me. I wrapped up a DVD for him and told Lily to go put it under the tree. I'm in our bedroom and I can hear:

Cody: "What is it?"

Lily: " It's a movie."

Cody:" Really, what's it called?"

Lily: "Community."

So next year if I have Lily help me wrap something I have to make sure she doesn't know what it is. Community, by the way is very funny, not 100% clean but not too bad.

Grounded (Updated)

Guess who's grounded until she's 18?

OK, maybe not til she's 18 but she definitely was in trouble. I should probably explain this better. During Lily's nap time on Tuesday she decided that she would rip her pretty wallpaper border (which Mommy totally loves) off of her wall. I was not happy. And neither was Cody cause that added another thing on his "Honey-do list". I have no idea why she did this. She's normally good during nap time. She usually just reads or plays with the toys in her bed.

So even though ripping the wallpaper off is pretty bad she did actually do a very sweet thing on Saturday morning that almost made me cry. The back story is that Owen was coughing a little on Friday, so I had decided that I would wait one more day until I called the doctor. But Saturday morning around 3 he started to cough really bad and just seemed like he was having a hard time breathing. So we tried a steam bath and that didn't really help, and then we decided just to take him to the ER. We woke up Lily and off we went. The ER was empty and they took us back right away. They told us that he had Croup (which is what I guessed) and gave him some steroids. They were just about to release us when Lily told the nurse, "Thank you for fixing Owen." That just melted my heart. It was probably one of the nicest things she has ever said to somebody else. So I guess we're doing at least one thing right in raising her. And Owen by the way is doing much better.

It's official . . . I'm old. Just kidding. I was a little worried about turning 30 but now that I'm 30 and two days I feel fine. I do feel a little more like a grown up though. Oh well.

So back in the end of July we went to a family reunion up in Illinois. And on our way there we stopped in St. Louis and saw the Arch. We didn't go up (the kids were kind-of fussy) but we did go to the museum and that was pretty cool. After that we took a carriage ride down on the waterfront which was also pretty cool.

Cody has been really desperately wanting to read Twilight, so I finally let him borrow my copy. OK so maybe desperately and wanting to are exaggerating just a bit. OK a LOT. Cody saw the movie Inception a couple of weeks ago with his brother (I didn't want to go see it, long story) and he comes home from the movie saying that I HAD to go see it. So he's like I'll read Twilight if you go see the movie. Knowing that this would probably be the only way I could ever get him to read the book, I agreed. The movie was actually really good, but I don't think he had a fun time with Twilight. Although a couple of times at night I heard laughing but I don't think it was the good kind of laughing. Now I have to figure a way to get him to read the other books.

So I'm really behind on the blogging. I'm so far behind that this post is about our anniversary back in June.

I've lived here all my life and have never been up the Tram. So when Cody asked me what I wanted to do for our anniversary, I told him I wanted to live on the wild side and go up the Tram. Sure the Tram may not seem very wild but since I'm scared to death of heights, it was a little frightening. So much in fact that I honestly wrote out a will leaving my kids to family before we left. I wish I was joking but I am not.

4 Months of Cuteness

Owen had his 4 month appointment last Friday. He weighs 15 pounds (75 %) and 27 inches long (95%). His new trick is to pull his knees under him and scoot forwards and backwards. He's very smiley. When he wakes up in the morning the first thing he does is smile at you. He's probably thinking "Hehe I got mommy to let me sleep in the big bed again. I am the Man." Good thing Mommy likes cuddles.

I can't believe he's already four months old. It really does seem like yesterday when I called Cody and told him to get his booty home ASAP from work cause Owen was definitely coming that day. And I'm so thankful that he's here. My precious little son.

Now that I have a moment, I can finally catch up on my blogging.

The kids are still cute and sweet.

Owen started to smile last week. I still haven't caught a good picture of him smiling but he's super cute when he does.

I checked on Lily one afternoon during her naptime and this is what I found. Her half sitting up, cuddling her bunny and playing with her hair.

My new bestfriend the Moby. I love this thing. It's not the official one. I can't bring myself to spend $40-$60 on a piece of fabric, so I just made mine for $5. :-)

My new car. OK not really. My car was in the shop getting fixed from our car accident we had back in December. The other guys insurance got us a rental and we got this 2010 Dodge Avenger. It was sooooo cool to drive. I really wanted to sneak out at 2 in the morning and go drag racing on Paseo but I didn't. I was good.

One of many reasons I'm glad Owen is a boy is so when he's older he can enjoy listening to basketball games with his dad. I mean I like basketball games (I went to see Micheal Jordan, and Dennis Rodman play at the Pit) but I just can't get into listening to it on the radio.

And the last thing is I cut my hair!!! 12 inches will be going to Locks of Love. I just feel so blessed by having Owen I wanted to do something special.

As cute as this ultrasound picture is I'd rather see Owen in person right about now. I confess that I am at that point in pregnancy where I'm just done. But apparently Owen is going to hang out a little longer. So anyone want to guess when he'll come and how much he'll weight? My original due date was yesterday but at our 20 week ultrasound he was measuring 6 days smaller so they pushed back my due date to the 24th. I've gained about as much weight this time as I did with Lily and she weighed 8 and 1/2 pounds. My guess is the 26th and 8 pounds 2 oz.

1st Peter 1

In our covenant groups we've been memorizing 1st Peter 1. We usually just say the first couple of lines out loud when we do family worship and apparently somebody has been paying attention.

This is what it's supposed to sound like. "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for the sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you."

One of the things Cody and Cheeky do together is watch 80's music videos on YouTube. Most are bands I've never heard of but Cheeky enjoys it very much.

So last week I went to Walmart to go get some stuff for the house. We're walking down an aisle when Cheeky says really loudly and I mean really loudly, "Mommy, look U2!" and is pointing to a guy with a bald head and shades. She thought it was this guy, The Edge.

She kept saying, "Mommy, U2" and pointing at the guy. So I hurried up and got everything I needed before we ran into the guy again.

Today we took Lily to her first Balloon Fiesta. It was so much fun. Tiring but fun. Cody and I haven't been in about 6 years. The last time we went we actually got to ride in a balloon. Cody had a co-worker who owned a balloon and they let us come with and be part of the chase crew and we got to go up. Riding in a balloon feels very strange. It doesn't really feel like you're moving until you land.

Trip

I'm really behind on blogging. I'm so tired that I'm usually asleep on the couch by 8:30. So this is our trip from a couple of weeks ago. We went up to Denver for a couple of days. We had lots of fun. We went to the Zoo, the aquarium, Rocky Mountain National Park, and we got to eat at Black Eyed-Pea which is my favorite resturant in the entire world and I'm really mad that they're only open in Texas and Colorado.

The Denver Zoo has a great tiger exhibit. The tiger can go inside or outside. When it's inside it's very close to you.

Lily's first and last carousel ride, at least for a little while. We asked her if she wanted to ride it and she said yes. So two seconds after the ride starts, she starts screaming bloody muder. She was on one that didn't even move. And normally she's my little daredevil baby. Not so much here.

Thanks everyone. We're very excited about the new baby.

I had a doctor's appointment on Wednesday and we got to hear the baby's heartbeat. I always love that part. My midwife also put me on Zofran for the nausea because I'm losing weight. I've taken it a couple of times and I love the stuff. I can actually eat. So my current diet plan is sugar, carbs, and chocolate.

This is the cake I did for the last class of cake decorating 101. It actually looks better in person. So I'm very pleased with it.

Day 25 - a week late

I really did mean to post a week ago but many other things got in the way. So here's the story of our last week. It's Christmas Eve and everything was fine until we got to church. I had just changed Lily's diaper and gave her to Cody so I could go wash my hands. I walk out of the nursery and see Cody carrying Lily (who is throwing up)to the kitchen. So we went home and she throw up about 5 more times, she would not keep anything down. We called our doctors office trying to find out what to do and they sent us to After Hours Pediatrics (who were very nice). We finally got home at 11:00 pm.

The next day Lily was sort-of OK. She was keeping stuffs down and acting a little like herself. So we decided that we could do both parents houses but in retrospect was a bad idea. Here's a picture of when Lily was feeling a little better.

That night Lily slept 12 hours straight which she never does. I'm lucky if she'll go 10. So she woke up 8ish and then took a nap at 10:30 and slept for 2 hours. She just got up on the couch and went to sleep, which is also very unLily. Here's a picture of that.

Sorry the story is so long I'll try to sum up the rest. Saturday I got sick but Lily was feeling a lot better. Sunday I was still not feeling great. Monday morning Lily throws up again (but I think this was because we give her some milk the night before. Um first time parents mistake.Oops.) And Cody starts feeling sick. Tuesday he starts to feel better and Lily is back to normal. And today Cody feels sick again. So that's where were at.

Hopefully tomorrow we'll all be better. This was not the Christmas vacation I was hoping for but I'm thankful that at least we're all together.

Here are some older pictures again. We've been busy and I haven't taken any pictures lately. So this is back from October. We went to a thing called Punkin Chunkin. It's basically a mini fair with people shooting pumpkins out of these huge cannons.

This one is of the Christmas wreath I made for our front door. I love the wreaths they have in the stores but their so expensive. So I made mine. I bought the wreath from Wal-mart for $5 and I got all the pretty stuff from Hobby Lobby for half off. It probably was under $15 so not too bad.

This one is from when we lived in our apartment and it's one of my favorite pictures.

On Monday mornings Lily goes to a class called Junior Jumps Bounce n' Boogie. In the class the teacher does all sorts of fun things like dancing, playing with different kinds of objects, bubbles, an obstacle course and a ton of other things. In the obstacle course she set up a tunnel where the kids can crawl through. And this is Lily's favorite thing to do. It's all she wants to do. So I told Cody we should get her a tunnel for Christmas. And this is what we got her. She saw the box and started screaming with excitement. So of course we had to test it out.

The Speake Family Christmas

So Cody and I have this tradition of going to look at lights after the Christmas Eve service. Last year we found this house. I had heard about it on the radio and wanted to check it out. It's very cool. The family synchronized the lights to some Christmas songs.
